6.7 Applicability in Emergency Settings

Although the process itself doesn’t require advanced equipment, using Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as a treatment method requires specialised skills and proper organisation of the treatment process and facility management, as well as continuous process monitoring. Therefore, it may not be practical during the initial acute response phase of an emergency.

However, if the supply of BSF larvae is available, it can be considered a viable option for the stabilisation and recovery phases. This treatment method is especially beneficial if there is a need for protein as animal feed and compost, and regulations are in place allowing the marketing and use of faecal sludge-derived products. Moreover, the organic solid waste can be co-treated with sludge, and the process can significantly reduce the volume in a relatively short time.
