8.5 What are common methods for infiltration?

Five main types of infiltration systems are regularly used:

  • Infiltration trench
  • Infiltration bed
  • Infiltration mound
  • Undrained sand filter
  • Soak pit

Ideally, the infiltration trench should be preferred to any other solution. However, when the soil is too permeable, or the water table is too close to the surface or the soil is too unstable (loose soil) or even when there is not enough space, other systems, such as the infiltration bed, the infiltration mound or sand filter, can be considered.
